Hotel Ukraine

I mentioned that we will be staying at the Hotel Ukraine when we get to Moscow. Here's a little more info. It was built in the 1950's and is a great example of some cool Soviet era architecture. Upon completion it was the largest hotel in the world (~700 feet or so). Not too shabby. It's on the Moscow River across from the Russian government building.

Click the link below to get some more scoop on the Hotel Ukraine.

It would be cool to have a room with a view, but we shall see...

The Hotel Ukraine is in a nice location, but is not very close to Red Square. Many of the lower cost alternatives around Red Square are seeing the wrecking ball. Another Soviet era hotel, the Rossiya (Russia), closed as of December 31 last year. It was right on Red Square and was, like the Ukraine, much cheaper than the Marriots and other Western hotels. The Rossiya is slated to be torn down this summer. It's going to get replaced by a fancy, expensive, hotel. Compared to the other buildings around Red Square, the Rossiya was no thing of beauty, but you couldn't beat a 100 yard walk to get to Red Square at a cheap price. You can see views of the Rossiya using the web-cam link on this page. It might be cool to watch them tear it down.

The Hotel Ukraine got a sprucing up a few years ago, so hopefully it will be around another 50 years.
